I was fortuatante to meet this great photographer back in 1993 (I think) when he opens a new wing or gallery at the NPG, London. You could tell the high regard Karsh was held in by his fellow photographers by the assembled photographers present for the photo oppotunity which read like a whos whos of photographers with all the Newspapaers and agencies top photographers and picture editors present.\n

\nKarsh was a master of the portrait photograph, he seemed to capture some of his subjects personalty with every shot, which to the viewer makes the image come to life.\n

\nYousuf Karsh (1908?2002) made some of the most iconic photography of his age. A Master of Portrait Photography\n

\nHis wry portrait of Winston Churchill lingers in the mind?s eye like few others. Though prolific, for him there could be no shortcuts. His probing images reveal deeper truths, as he once stated, ?Within every man and woman a secret is hidden.? He was an artist unafraid to boldly feature negative space. Aesthetically precise, his style makes deft use of studio lights and enveloping, inky tones. Karsh?s stylized compositions captured everyone from Sophia Loren to Bernard Shaw to Fidel Castro, making the Armenian-born photographer who fled to Syria and Canada in his youth, into a powerful photographic master.\n \n
