Laurie Simmons began working on her "Instant Decorator? series in 2001. Based on an interior decorating book of the same name, published in 1976, it comprises works that are collage-like and opulently filled with accessories and characters in dramatic mises en scne. The images are at once aesthetically striking, playful, and loaded with hints and references.
A Guggenheim Fellow, Laurie Simmons is the subject of numerous publications, and her work has been widely published and exhibited in the United States and abroad. Her photographs are included in the permanent collections of such institutions as the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; and Hara Museum, Tokyo.
